Upgrading your firmware
Once I discovered that I did not have the latest firmware version on my phone, I proceeded with the steps to upgrade it. I couldn’t find my DKU-2 USB cable to connect the phone to my PC, so I ordered one off eBay for $0.98 (+ $5 shipping). Once that arrived, I noticed that Nokia had released a new version of its PC Suite Software, so I uninstalled my previous version and installed the new Version 6.82. After installation, I had to restart my PC to enable my Nokia 6682 to connect to my PC via PC Suite. I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Nokia’s Phone Software updater (which is only available at their European website for some reason). After installation, my phone would no longer connect to my PC over USB, but a restart took care of that.
Now that all the software was ready, I backed up my phone’s memory to my memory card (via Tools > Memory > Options > Backup phone mem.). I launched PC Suite, connected my phone, and then started the Phone Software updater from within PC Suite (which took 2 tries to get it to fully start up for some reason). I then began the upgrade process, following all on-screen instructions. During the upgrade, there is a huge warning message instructing you to not shut off the phone or else face grave consequences. So once my phone shut off about 10% into the process and the installer hung, I was worried, to say the least. The progress bar did eventually move though, and once it finished, the phone turned itself back on. I then restored my phone’s memory from the memory card (via Tools > Memory > Options > Restore from card), and all was well with my newly upgraded Nokia 6682.

Hey, neat site. Going to try to figure out how to get GnuBox to work with my Mac so I can use AvantGo and run daily sync without having to use air/data minutes. I wrote about my 6682 experience on my own blog, JOEyGADGET.com, so check it out some time. Anyway, thanks for the cool site! Joe

Interesting bilal… I’ve only heard of firmware versions 4.62.0 and 4.65.0 so far for the Nokia 6682 (at least the Cingular-branded version). Is your 6682 an unlocked & unbranded version? When did you purchase it?

My provider is cingular/at&t.
I followed the instruction exactly the way you have it up.
I am trying to update my firmware because my 2gb RS MMC doesnt work on my phone(6682).
My phone doesnt even recognize my 2gb MMC card.

I’m guessing the difference in firmware has to do with the unlocked vs. Cingular versions.
I’ve read online that some versions of the Kingston 2GB RS-MMC Dual Voltage memory cards don’t work with the Nokia 6682, but if you contact Kingston support, they’ll exchange it for one that does. Is your memory card a Kingston?

Yes i already called up kingston and they have replaced my card with another one. but i didnt tell them its for my nokia 6682. I just said my card doesnt work. I
I was reading reviews on newegg
website for that same card and everybody said their card was working fine on their 6682. I only found two searches where people said it doesnt work otherwise everybody else’s card works in 6682. but mine doesnt not.
anyways thanx for helping John

Thanks for the great article. I’m upgrading my 6682 from 4.62.0. Hopefully it will fix a few of the annoyances that plague this phone. When I went to the Nokia site, thier flash wizard listed the 6680 and 6681, but skipped the 6682 and jumped to 6800. Is there anything I should watch out for when I update? Do I need to remove the memory card after I back up?

The Nokia 6682 should be listed at Nokia’s website (http://europe.nokia.com/A4176089). Make sure you backup everything important to you before upgrading in case something goes wrong. I use Shozu to backup my contacts, in addition to backing them up to the sim card.

John,
I must say that you have put up a great site with a lot of useful info.Keep up the good work. I recently bought the phone and am glad that I chose it. I am planning to upgrade my MMC card and searching a few sites (newegg, zipzoomfly, …) for a cheap card (with either 1 or 3 gb memory), but am not too confident if I should buy one from these sites or not. Do you have any idea about the dual voltage specified for the card that comes with the phone? The cards available in the market are 1.8/3.3 Volts I think, but, if I am not mistaken, the card that comes with the phone has a voltage requirement of 1.8/3.0 V (I am not too sure about that). Please let me know. and any suggestions for where I should buy the card from would be appreciated. I have a cingular plan and my firmware version is 4.65.0. Thanks

John, I’m attempting to upgrade my firmware to remedy the constant restarting and freezing of my phone. It’s to the point where it’s not even functional, and I’d be lucky to get through a firmware upgrade without it restarting, thus bricking the phone.
My problem is that the nokia firmware updater software doesn’t seem to recognize the 6682 for upgrade. It knows the phone is there, my pc detects it, but it for some reason will not allow it to upgrade. Is there something I’m missing?

Have been having a Cingular 6682 since Mar 06 - firmware v4.62. As others say, updater detects phone but says cant update. Anyone can help us?

I’m having the same problem as others mentioned. The machine detects the phone and lets me see it, but Nokia Software Updater says that the software can’t be updated. I tried this with the Cingular (AT&T) product code, and also used NSS to change the product code to an unlocked 6682. It won’t update it either way and it’s driving me nuts because some people have obviously updated their phones this way.

This past weekend, I noticed my PDF reader had vanished from my Office menu. Then I went to show a friend my pictures, and they were ALL GONE. Now my memory card is showing that it is almost full, but there is nothing there. What do I do?

I have spoken to 2 people at AT&T/Cingular who said they cannot “push” the new firmware into a 6682. I’m stuck. Has anyone contacted Nokia directly?
