Once I discovered that I did not have the latest firmware version on my phone, I proceeded with the steps to upgrade it. I couldn’t find my DKU-2 USB cable to connect the phone to my PC, so I ordered one off eBay for $0.98 (+ $5 shipping). Once that arrived, I noticed that Nokia had released a new version of its PC Suite Software, so I uninstalled my previous version and installed the new Version 6.82. After installation, I had to restart my PC to enable my Nokia 6682 to connect to my PC via PC Suite. I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Nokia’s Phone Software updater (which is only available at their European website for some reason). After installation, my phone would no longer connect to my PC over USB, but a restart took care of that.

Now that all the software was ready, I backed up my phone’s memory to my memory card (via Tools > Memory > Options > Backup phone mem.). I launched PC Suite, connected my phone, and then started the Phone Software updater from within PC Suite (which took 2 tries to get it to fully start up for some reason). I then began the upgrade process, following all on-screen instructions. During the upgrade, there is a huge warning message instructing you to not shut off the phone or else face grave consequences. So once my phone shut off about 10% into the process and the installer hung, I was worried, to say the least. The progress bar did eventually move though, and once it finished, the phone turned itself back on. I then restored my phone’s memory from the memory card (via Tools > Memory > Options > Restore from card), and all was well with my newly upgraded Nokia 6682.

I’ll admit it, I’m addicted to RSS. I’m always reading feeds from 100+ sites I have in my RSS Reader. Being able to easily access my feeds from my mobile phone just makes it that much more addictive. But it’s a good addiction! Here are some suggestions for viewing your RSS feeds on your Nokia 6682:

Bloglines Mobile

Bloglines was my RSS Reader of choice ever since I discovered RSS. Bloglines Mobile can be accessed via your phone’s web browser, and its functionality is very similar to the standard version, so if you’ve been using Bloglines, you’ll easily understand their mobile interface. My only complaint about Bloglines is once you click on a feed, it immediately marks all the latest entries as “read.” You have the option to “keep all as new”, but if you have a feed that has 50 new posts and you only have time to read 25, you’re stuck with the decision of marking all 50 as new, or leaving them as unread and trying to remember to come back to read the ones you missed.

Google Reader Mobile

While the mobile version of Google Reader has been available since May of this year, I did not make the switch to Google Reader until the past few weeks when Google rolled out a greatly improved update to their standard Google Reader. Like Bloglines Mobile, Google Reader Mobile is accessed via your mobile web browser. The advantages of Google Reader over Bloglines are you have the option either view the full feed or just the headlines (and then click to view the individual post), a post is not “marked as read” until you actually click it in the reader (there’s an option to quickly “Mark All as Read” if you wish), and the ability to “star” the posts you’d like to mark as such. Google Reader allows you to easily import your existing RSS feeds, so making the switch is very simple.

Resco News Series 60

Resco News Series 60 is an RSS Reader application for your phone. They offer a 14-day free trial, and then you have to pay $11.95 for the software. Since it is an application, you have full capabilities to manage your feeds directly in your phone very easily… something that no web-based RSS Reader will offer you (at least with today’s current mobile browser technology). Like Google Reader, Resco News allows you to import your feed subscriptions via an OPML file, so it’s easy to try it out to see if the $11.95 is worth it for your RSS Reading needs.

Now that you have a rundown of some of the RSS Reader options for your mobile phone, why not add this website’s RSS feed to your RSS Reader?

If I recall correctly, a version of Opera Mobile comes preinstalled on the Nokia 6682, but it is not the latest version. Opera Mobile 8.65 was released on Septemeber 1, 2006, and is a FREE download for owners of the Nokia 6682 (others will have to pay $29). So if you haven’t upgraded yet, do so now!

For those not convinced yet, new features in Opera Mobile 8.65 include:

Improved start page that makes it easier to enter a Web address and go directly to your most frequently visited Web pages.

More intuitive text entering into form fields on Web pages. Simply start typing as soon as the form field has the focus, with no need to click first.

The behaviour of shortcut keys has been changed to avoid confusion when users accidentally press the wrong key. By default, Opera Mobile 8.65 has a two-key version of shortcut keys, where you press # + key. If you are a shortcut keys fan, you can still go back to one-key mode in settings.

More content on the screen: With 8.65 the size of the user interface has been reduced to make more room for the Web page content. Naturally, you can still select Full Screen mode.

Advanced users will enjoy the “pencil key” + joystick to go Page left/right/up/down in desktop mode, or customizing the keyboard to have these as shortcut keys. Zoom in/Zoom out is now also available as shortcut keys.

For full details and to download, see the product page.
